AmitySoft introduces software sizing method to India

1st January 2001

When AmitySoft recently brought software-sizing guru, Charles Symons, to India, It introduced Indian software developers to a new method of estimating project size. Symons in the Director, Software Measurement Services Ltd., inventor of Mk II Function Point Analysis.

Mk II is the UK Government’s mandated method for sizing software projects. The advantage of getting a size estimate early is that you already know productivity levels from older projects. Although the Function Point Method had been popular with the traditional development, it doesn’t work with the new technology.

“How do you size software? One way is to count the components delivered in terms of objects or lines of code. The problem with this is that it depends upon the technology used. To Measure performance, the equation is productivity = size/effort. But when you compare COBOL development with Java development, you can’t measure size in a uniform way. Another way is to estimate, very early in the lifecycle, the size of the problem. Lines of code tell you the size of the solution. I want to size software requirements before choosing the technology”, stated Symons.

“Function point (the IFPUG method) is used in business MIS systems. COSMIC FFP aimed at developing a functional sizing method based on requirements independent of technology. IFPUG doesn’t work for modern MIS systems. COSMIC FFP aimed at developing a functional sizing method based on requirement independent of technology. IFPUG doesn’t work for modern MIS systems. The need is to help people produce a structured catalog of requirements from an outline. Sizing the software project is trivial once you catalog requirements,” he added.

“From a one-page requirement, you come out with a sizing of the application. Cosmic FFP is the only sizing technique for real-time development,” said K Ramesh , COO, AmitySoft Technologies Pvt Ltd “Developers from IBM, Infosys, Satyam and Robert Bosch were present at the seminar on COSMIC FFP. They now want to implement pilot project using this method,” he added.

COSMIC (Common Software Measurement. International Consort-ium) is an international consortium of software metrics experts from Australia,Canada,Japan, Finland,Germany, the Nertherland, UK and Italy. The COSMIC FFP method has been accepted as a work program by ISO standard version is expected in a few years.
