Product testing emerges as niche area of business
17th December 2001
The prevailing slowdown has forced software companies to increasingly resort to third party testing of their products and solutions. Product testing itself is becoming more and more stringent in this tight market, as vendors are turning apprehensive of losing clients over small errors. Companies that specialize in software testing have seen a spurt in enquiries over the last few months.
Mr. K. Ramesh, Director- Marketing and Delivery, of Chennai based AmitySoft Technologies Private Limited a software testing company, said ever since the slowdown set in, his firm had witnessed a spurt in the number of testing enquiries. While the enquiries were up by 40 per cent, nearly 15 per cent of them got converted into deals.
"During the not-so-distant boom time, companies used to get away with occasional faults in the software they developed of setting it right at their own costs. But that is not the case now. Not only is their reputation is at stake, but they also stand to lose the clients. So there is a major demand for third party testing services," Mr. Ramesh said.
Mr.Bharat Gera, President and Managing Director of Think Ahead, a Bangalore-based product testing company, said that his firm witnessed a 40-60 per cent increase in enquiries, especially from the small companies. These queries were in early stages with the products set for release. Besides those from US Companies, the enquiries from Indian companies had also gone up, he said.
Currently three domestic companies were in talks with Think Ahead to use its services.
"This sudden spurt is driven by the fact that customers are now insisting that the products or services they are availing get thoroughly tested before getting installed. Software companies are getting in touch with us directly and we don’t see any need to travel to
generate business," Mr Gera said.
While the small and medium companies were actively availing the services of third party testing companies, bigger companies were utilizing their bench to carry out the testing in-house, said industry sources. According to Mr Prakash Mutalik, Chairman,
RelQ Software, one of the earliest Indian company in the testing domain, the software companies are looking at testing seriously as an area for diversification. However, he said that his company had not seen any spurt in enquiries.
"The awareness about the need for testing services is catching up fast. We don’t need to sell the concept any more," said
Mr. Gera. According to him, the quality of enquiries had also gone up considerably. "We now get more serious enquiries and the companies
also close deals very fast, within two to three weeks," he added. |
